Novak's cave on Romanija mountain

Novak's cave (Novakova pećina) is located on inaccessible cliffs of Romanija mountain near city of Pale. This cave is named after Old Novak (Starina Novak) that was famous for his rebellion fight against Ottoman Turks and road robbery on the same mountain with his group of robbers (hajduci).

Old Novak lived a while in the cave during the XVI century and there was his stronghold because  this location is a very inaccessible place and has good viewing point on approaching forces.

Mountaineers destination on Romanija

The cave itself is located on altitude of 1515 meters. Romanija is a very beautiful mountain for tourists and this is one of the attractions that gather those who like walking in the nature. Tourist route to the cave starts near destroyed mountaineers hut  at Stajna - 4 kilometers far from city of Pale. There is a mountaineers path to the cave. At first part of the path visitor can enjoy fresh water from the Novak's spring and after it there is a trail through the thick evergreen woods that ends with Novak's pasture - place suitable for camping and rest.

Novak's cave is located on the cliff and path that leads to it is relatively hard for climbing. On some parts you will find a rope for holding on dangerous places. We thank Mrs. Tihana Goričnik that allow us the use of her pictures in this article.
