Mountaineering on Čvrsnica mountain

Čvrsnica is a mountain located in Herzegovina and it is the fourth highest mountain in our country with the highest peak Pločno which is 2226 meters high. You can come to Čvrsnica from two directions: the east side, along side Drežanka, a tributary of the Neretva river through the canyon Diva Grabovica, and from the west side, from the direction of Jablanica over "Sovićka vrata" and lake Blidinje.

Čvrsnica is mountain with a little water in summer months when high heat prevails in that region, so we recommend to provide yourself with sufficient amounts of water before climbing.

Čvrsnica - flower mountain

Area of Čvrsnica mountain is rich with variety of plant species of low plants. Flowers has bright colors and intense fragrance is simply in the air all around you. Čvrsnica has at first alternate flowery meadows that later disappears and was replaced by low bushes and various other spices. It is simply amazing about the smell of flowers in the air that changes while you climb up just as the color and shape of flowers vary according to altitude. Since Čvrsnica is a high mountain and it is not strange to find snow on the peaks even in summer when temperatures is very high in Herzegovina.

In this article we will present you a mountaineering tour organized by a group of Croatian mountaineers. In the pictures that follow you will see the exact route they taken to Čvrsnica. The road is very risky and requires great experience. Climbing this way is allowed only on personal responsibility as it stands on one of the signs that are seen in the pictures. It was a two-day tour with a break in a mountain hut Vilinac and with a visit to the lake Crvenjak on Čvrsnica.

We thank Mrs. Tihana Goričnik that allow us the use of her pictures from the tour in this article. It was very difficult to choose a hundred pictures to publish them between around 500 very beautiful pictures, so recommend you to visit her Picasa album from this tour and see the rest of the images.

Important note

This is one of the hardest routes for climbing on Čvrsnica. Great experience is needed, but also some equipment is required like helmet and so on. This route is not for beginners since there is almost 2000 meters of climbing on very difficult terrain. Even experienced climbers should take care because climbing infrastructure on the site is in deteriorated state. Having an experienced guide is highly recommended.
