Climbing on Lupoglav on Prenj mountain

Lupoglav is one of the eleven peaks on Prenj mountain higher than 2000 meters. Exact altitude of Lupoglav is 2102 meters above sea level and it is considered as one of the very serious climbing destinations.

How serious and dangerous Lupoglav can be we can see from the fact that three mountaineers, Ilija Dilber, Milorad Stjepanović and Zijo Jajatović died in a tragic accident in the snow blizzard on 14. February 1970 on this peak. They ware legends in rock climbing, but serious blizzard was stronger.

Annual memorial climbing on Lupoglav

Every year local mountaineering clubs organize memorial climbing on Lupoglav in winter conditions, usually in February, in remembrance of these brave mountaineers. These events gathers dozens of mountaineers all over the Bosnia and Herzegovina and it is usually closely followed by support of mountain rescue teams.

One climb in two year's seasons

In this article we will present you one of the ascends on Lupoglav that happened on 20-21.Mart 2010. As the participants of this tour says this tour began in winter and ends in spring. Most participants of this tour was from the mountaineers club PD Konjuh from Tuzla, but there ware some members from other clubs like PD Varda-Banovići, PD Svatovac-Lukavac and PD Visočica-Visoko. Twenty kilometers before Mostar they turned to the unpaved road where they left their cars and starts 6 hour long climb to the base camp where they will spend the night in tents before ascend on Lupoglav.

At the altitude of 1100 meters they meet with the snow that make climbing even more harder. At the altitude of 1600 meters they came to the base camp at the afternoon. Lunch, dinner, melting the snow for everyday needs and preparing the tents for night.

Morning starts in 04:00 and half hour later they are on their way up to the Lupoglav peak. At 08:00 they successfully came to the top of Lupoglav peak at 2102 meters where they make a short pause of 10-15 minutes before descend.
