Winter hiking on Trebević mountain

Trebević is a mountain 1629 meters high and located southeast from Sarajevo at the exact border of Sarajevo city center. Hikers and mountaineers can start their climbing on Trebević literally from the city streets so this is one of the favorite mountains for this kind of adventure.

In that case they could have more than a 1000 meters altitude difference to climb, but for the beginners in hiking and mountaineering there is a option for shorter paths that can be reached by the weekend bus line or by the own car. Beauty of the Trebević is specially emphasized because of thick evergreen forests that dominate on the northern side of Trebević.

These woods are a result of the extensive forestation efforts in the past century from the time of Austro Hungarian occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina till the recent war. Sarajevo has a great advantage over the other world cities for having such huge mountain almost in it's center as a park that creates such a huge quantities of oxygen and purifies the air. Beside Trebević there is also Igman mountain that has a similar role.

Mountain cleared of mines

As a result of war activities most mountaineers lodges are destroyed during the war on Trebević. There was a confrontation line during the war so the mountain was filled with mines. That was the main reason for abandonment of this wonderful recreational park in the times after the war. People was simply scared to go to this beauty, but with the extensive efforts of demining companies this mountain is cleared of all mines. Even before that there was a possibility for safe hiking on the marked routes and on the main road to the top of Trebević that leads to the 60 meter high TV station tower located on the top.

In this article we bring to you an album of the recent winter hiking tour to the top of Trebević. In the album you could see that hiking paths are well marked and as a reward on the top there is a wonderful view on the nearby mountains.
